Tencent invests $297 million in Assassin’s Creed franchise
Tecent, the Chinese Tech gigant, made another big acquisition. This time has invested $297 million on Assassin's Creed projects from Ubisoft.
In the last year you have witnessed a number of big adquisitions. What is going on with these studios? Well, simply put they are big but not big enough.
The cost of creating a AAA game ranges from $100 to $200 million. This has put big game companies into the corner, where the only way to survive is with more capital. Tencent has a net worth of $398.39 billion, where as Ubisoft only has $5.45 billion. What about other companies? Well, CD Project Red has a net worth of $2 billion, Rockstar has $858.2 million, Blizzard has $60.65 billion. So did you think these companies where big? You will need to think twice when you put a giant like Tencent on the table.
According to Tencent plans, they see a promising future on the game industry by making AAA projects budget increase to $400 million per project. This will make the AAA projects have more innovative games, or at least that's the plan.
Why is this important to Indie Game Developers?
In the last years there hasn't been much innovation in AAA games. This is the right time to make Indies stand out, it happened in the movie industry where you could see a wave of indie movies. These investments are going to see the return in the future. Actually, everyone is looking for Indie Game Developers now, even Tencent is investing in small studios.
Now is the time to innovate. It is time to create games using the tools you have. You have more advantages compared to AAA companies, you can innovate, you can have the tools for free like Unreal Engine 5 and the knowledge on how to create games for free.
If you want to create a game, today is the best time to do that.
